Pest Management

The focus is on biologically-based insect pest management in vegetable greenhouses and other extended season-production techniques, with emphasis on limited-resource producers.  The most effective natural enemies for pests commonly found in the Mid-Atlantic region are being tested with management techniques that enhance their efficacy and longevity. A web site has been developed to include current research efforts and recommendations to assist greenhouse growers in selecting the most effective methods and techniques of biological pest control. High-tunnels are a recent addition to this research.  These unheated plastic shelters allow produce to reach market earlier in the spring and later in the fall.

Environmental conditions are an important aspect of off-season production, especially available light, temperature and humidity.  These parameters are being monitored with reference to plant production and pest control. In addition, plant extracts are being evaluated for potential development into insecticidal botanical products for use in greenhouses.
