MISSION STATEMENT

The VSU Department of Nursing will promote and sustain an environment of academic excellence, scholarly inquiry and civility to prepare nurses for entry into professional nursing practice through advanced technology, clinical experiential learning and community involvement.
 
The curriculum purpose of the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing at Virginia State University is to equip an entering nursing with the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for beginning professional practice. The VSU Nursing program upholds the Virginia Board of Nursing regulations for registered nursing, in that, the Board believes that each practitioner of nursing is accountable to the Commonwealth and to the public to maintain high professional standards of practice in keeping with the ethics of the profession of nursing. The registered nurse is responsible and accountable for making decisions that are based upon educational preparation and experience in nursing. The registered nurse shall be held accountable for the quality and quantity of nursing care given patients by himself/herself or others who are under his/her supervision.
 
 The Virginia State University nursing program integrates instruction, research, and extension/public service in a design most responsive to the needs and endeavors of individuals, families, groups, communities and society within its scope of influence. The Department of Nursing and the University is dedicated to the promotion of knowledgeable, perceptive, and humane citizens secure in their self-awareness, equipped for personal fulfillment, sensitive to the needs and aspirations of others, and committed to assuming productive roles in a challenging and ever-changing global society.
 
The VSU nursing program provides a body of knowledge derived from liberal arts, biological, physical, behavioral sciences and nursing. The program provides the foundation for advanced preparation in nursing and life-long learning, “The education of your life.”
