Standard 5. Element Three: Modeling Best Professional Practices in ScholarshipUnit faculty members belong to a wide range of professional organizations that encourage professional growth through participation in conferences and convocations, the reading of publications, and the observation of professional standards stipulated by their membership. Additional scholarship activities include serving on editorial boards, reviewing books, publishing books and articles, proposals and grant applications. Through these activities, faculty collaborate with members of the university and professional community to improve teaching and learning in PK-12 schools and teacher education (Exhibit 5.2). A variety of scholarly work conducted by most faculty is incorporated in a quarterly revision of their syllabi, including research and publications. VSU faculty have been increasingly successful in receiving financial support through the Provost’s Office for their scholarly efforts. Consistent with the Unit’s commitment to teaching and service, Unit faculty are active in scholarly projects that impact the local PK-12 schools. Many faculty members serve as coordinators and presenters at school and district level in-service meetings, and a growing number of faculty members are being asked to serve as outside consultants to local school districts.
