Standard 1. Element Six: Dispositions for All Candidates

The unit has identified professional dispositions for all candidates in its programs. At the initial level these dispositions are identified in the conceptual framework. These dispositions are assessed during student teaching with the Student Teaching Assessment. Candidates in the program are familiar with the dispositions expected of their profession and reflect that understanding in the classroom. Overall, 91% of the candidates in the undergraduate program demonstrate positive dispositions for the profession (Tables 25 and 26). 89% demonstrate a commitment to life long learning and high ethical and professional values in the classroom. Candidates also perform at a high level in showing respect for learners in the classroom environment.

Cooperating teacher surveys show that 74% of the candidates performed at or above the proficient level during student teaching (Table 27).

Professional dispositions are also measured prior to admission into the program as a part of the admissions interview. Faculty and other school personnel rated 75% of candidates’ dispositions at the exceptional level. The unit has communicated its dispositions to the candidates and the data in Table 28 provides evidence that candidates have the desired professional disposition for teaching.

Professional dispositions for advanced programs are also explicitly stated for all candidates in the conceptual framework. These dispositions are aligned with Specialized Professional Associations standards and state competencies. The Educational Administration and Supervision Employer Satisfaction Survey shows a 92% satisfaction rate with the dispositions of candidates from the program (Table 29).

The Exit Survey for candidate performance in the same program reinforces this satisfaction rate. 83% of the respondents strongly agreed that the courses and experiences in the Educational Administration and Supervision program helped them develop the dispositions required of school building administrators (Table 30).

Candidate dispositions in the School Counseling program are also evaluated as above average and excellent on the On-site Evaluation (Table 31). Candidates performed at an 86% rate on the seven indicators identified by the program.
