VSU vs. Elizabeth City State University - 2/18/2006 TROJANS LOSE TO VIKINGS Elizabeth City, North Carolina – The Trojans of Virginia State University took on the Elizabeth City State University Vikings. After the score-for-score struggle was tied nine times and had 28 lead changes, it was the Vikings that topped the Trojans for a 79 - 74 win. VSU seized the tip-off and as usual VSU’s #25 Brain “Hang Time” Henderson made it his business to blast off with it. Henderson’s flight crashed into a defensive rebound for the Vikings. ECSU’s #4 Brian West crept through Trojan towers to nail a three-pointer. The game’s first tie (5 – 5) was birth was a made three-pointer by #3 Le’Greg Harrison. Two made free throws around the eight minute mark by #5 Rodney Henry unknotted the half’s third tie (16 – 16) and gave the Trojans a two point lead (18 – 16). Henderson made two tough baskets and then passed his offensive rebound to Harrison for another three-pointer. The Trojans led by seven (28 – 18), but in the last five minutes, ECSU’s offense caught its breath to retake the lead (28 – 27) via a 10 – 2 scoring run. Henry hit his second three-pointer just under the one minute mark to give VSU a 30 – 28 halftime lead. At the beginning of the second half, ECSU’s West pulled up from the wing to hit a rim blazing three-pointer. VSU’s Henderson made one of two free-throw attempts to tie the game for the sixth time (31 – 31). Fans began voicing complaints of whiplash as they had to use speedy side to side motion to catch all the action between both teams. The first ten minutes consisted of VSU and ECSU producing a patter of visitor by two, home by one… home by two, visitor by one. ECSU elevated to lead by three following one of three second half three-pointers by #11 Mitchell Moffatt. Nevertheless, Henderson was the culprit once again to tie the game (53 – 53) with a made free throw. An “And 1” play by Henry gave VSU a one point (59 – 58) lead. The Vikings gave themselves some breathing run with a 12 -0 4 scoring spurt to lead 70 – 63. With a little over three minutes remaining, VSU took their last full timeout at 2:13 following a three-pointer by #33 Aubrey Brown. Another three by Mr. Brown brought the Trojans within one (75 – 74 ECSU) of the Vikings. However, the Trojans failed in pulling off a successful shot in the last thirty seconds and were left with nothing to do but foul. VSU had five players to finish in double figures. Leading in scoring for the Trojans was #5 Rodney Henry with 19 points. Providing additional offense was #33 Aubrey Brown with 13 points, #3 Le’Greg Harrison with 11 points, and #24 Michael Askew and #25 Brian “Hang Time” Henderson each with 10 points. Askew and Henderson combined for almost half of VSU’s total rebounds teaming up for 10. Entrepreneur Harrison kept his Assist King title collecting the most assists with six of the team’s 12 total assists as Henderson harassed the defense for four thefts. On a special note, many of the nominations have been submitted and the votes have been tallied. All the way from Tampa, Florida, freshman #33 Aubrey Brown’s name was scripted in ink as a selection on the 2005 – 2006 CIAA All-Rookie Team. Congratulations to Aubrey and his family, the Trojans and the coaching staff, and all the supporters of the VSU Trojans. Cannot make it to the game?
