LADY TROJANS LOSE TO LIVINGSTONE Salisbury, NC – The Virginia State University Lady Trojans navigated to the neighboring state to battle the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Despite having four players to finish in double figures, the Lady Trojans dropped their second straight CIAA competition of the season to LC 69 – 83. The Lady Trojans still anxiously awaited to scratch their itch for a rapid roster return of pre-season picked key returnees #20 Jennifer Rhodan and #21 Erica Glasper. In the meanwhile, Coach Shae Johnson preached the perspective of the weight of production not solely being lofted upon the shoulders of one or two players, but to be evenly distributed amongst everybody. LC took possession of the tip-off and got on the scoreboard early with two free throws by #1 Lina “Love” Brown. VSU did not fret as with excellent ball rotation, they received their first point from #5 Alexander Street after she was fouled by LC’s Love. The Lady Blue Bears’ #44 LaTanya Walker clawed an offensive rebound and produced a put back to give LC a 4 – 1 lead. VSU’s #43 Felicia “Stretch” Gibbs swatted her second shot of the half and the defensive rebounded was rescued by #4 Janae Johnson. The Sacramento, CA native passed to #10 Asheley Alexander for a lay-up and then pulled up from behind the arc to tie the game at 6 – 6. The Psychology major sparked the nets again on the next drive with a jumper that was just inside the three-point line to tie the game at 8 – 8. At the 13:25 mark, LC took a full timeout. During the thirty-second breather, Coach Andrew Mitchell subbed in #13 Jennifer Miller. The sophomore guard came right in and hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Blue Bears an 11 – 8 lead. It was not until 9:43 mark that VSU took its first lead via a backdoor assist by Johnson to #12 Nikki Hayes for two and then a lay-up by #2 Christina “Bobby” Williams. Two more lay-ups, one by Johnson and one from Alexander, stretched VSU’s point margin advantage to 20 – 15. However, LC roared back via motor city Miller’s third and fourth pointer to take a 27 – 26 lead. Then the Lady Trojans’ #3 Katania “KT” Walker drove and dished to #31 Myesha Gillespie for the lay-up right before Johnson made her fourth field goal of the half. VSU’s Street tied the game for the seventh time with a phenomenal three-point play. Nevertheless, Lady Blue Bear Miller’s 21 first half points caved the Lady Trojans 38 – 30 at halftime. In the second half, the additional objective on VSU’s agenda was to drown the fiery fingers of LC’s Miller. The Lady Trojans did just that as none of the three shots Miller took resulted in points for LC. On the other hand, just as soon as VSU washed out Miller’s wildfire, the Lady Trojans had to deal with the Lady Blue Bears’ second half stick of dynamite Love. The Sociology major scored LC’s first eight points to spark up the Lady Blue Bears’ 11 – 0 scoring spurt. VSU took at timeout at 17:35 and finally got a shot to sink at 16:47 with a three-pointer by KT. The Lady Trojans started to reconfigure their footing in the game with big back-to-back baskets by Hayes (58 – 47 LC). However, the Lady Trojans’ chances to comeback crashed with LC out-rebounding VSU 59 – 31 and Love’s 18 second half points. Leading in scoring for the Lady Trojans were #3 Katania Walker, #4 Janae Johnson, and #10 Asheley Alexander. The guards each flushed the nets for 14 points each. Providing additional scoring was freshman Sport Management major #12 Nikki Hayes with 13 points. Defensively, VSU’s #43 Felicia Gibbs swatted four of her five blocks in the first half as Walker and Hayes hustled for five steal each.
