VSU BITTEN BY BSU

Bowie, MD – The Trojans of Virginia State University left the Land of Troy to retrieve a victory against the Bowie State University Bulldogs. Despite leading on four separate occasions in the first half, VSU drops its first road conference game of the year 70 – 51 to BSU.

In the first half, the Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard first 1 – 0 with a free-throw made by #1 Derick Payne. The Trojans answered with an offensive put back by #50 Jahmel Raymond. Shortly thereafter, VSU’s #23 Mark Adams pulled up from three-point territory to give VSU a 6 – 3 lead. Coach Collins’ Orange & Blue Boys barb-wired their third lead of the game (14 – 11) with a piercing three-pointer by #3 Aubrey Brown and two made free throws by #5 Rodney Henry. Brown’s three-pointer at the 15:04 mark would be the last successful field goal made by VSU. The Trojans shot three of 23 (11.1%) from the field and 25% (two of eight) from three-point range. Around the 10 minute mark, Bulldog Payne’s lay-up gave BSU a 17 – 16 lead. Then, #21 Thomas Hawkins popped the nets with a three-pointer and an immediate jumper. The back-to-back baskets began BSU’s “count up” as the Bulldogs bulldozed ahead by 4, 8, 11, and then by 16 at the intermission.

At the start of the second half, the Trojans were in very much need of someone, a go to guy to jumpstart the motor of VSU’s offense. The Trojans’ aspirations were answered as Woodbridge, VA native #24 Michael Askew arose to the occasion. Askew hit a three-pointer and two lay-ups in the first three minutes. Then, #25 Brian Henderson received a rifled assist from #3 Le’Greg Harrison to muscle in two points to bring the Trojans within nine (37 – 28 BSU). At the 12 minute mark, the Trojans were down their smallest point deficit of eight points (43 – 35 BSU) via another tough two-pointer by Henderson. However, with Askew and Henderson being the main players of production, BSU gave VSU second degree burns with hot shots from near and far throughout the remainder of the game.

Leading in scoring for the Trojans was #24 Michael Askew. All of Askew’s 22 game high points were poured in during the second half. Providing additional scoring was #25 Brian Henderson with 10 points as #5 Rodney Henry and #42 Cohen Burnette combined for eight points. Henderson and Askew also hustled for a game high eight rebounds each.

The Virginia State University Trojans will dust themselves off and saddle up for the next shootout with the Blue Bears of Livingstone College on Tuesday, January 10, 2006. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
