President Moore to Keynote VSU Convocation

Virginia State University President Eddie N. Moore, Jr. will formally begin his final year at the university by delivering the keynote address at VSU’s annual Fall Opening Convocation at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14 in Daniel Gymnasium. 
 
President Moore assumed his position as the 12th president of Virginia State University on June 1, 1993. He has provided the school with a wealth of administrative, fiscal, and academic management expertise, borne of experience in both the public and private sectors. Before coming to VSU, he served as the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In late 2008 President Moore announced he will retire from VSU in June 2010.
 
In 1971, Moore began his career in the private sector at the Gulf Oil Corporation. During his 14-year tenure with Gulf Oil, he rose through the ranks, eventually directing major components of the corporation’s accounting and budgeting functions. He entered the public sector in 1985 as the Assistant Comptroller for Accounting and Reporting for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1988, he was selected to serve concurrently as both the University Comptroller for the College of William and Mary, and as the Treasurer of its Endowment Association. In 1990, Mr. Moore became the head of the Department of the Treasurer under Governor Lawrence Douglas Wilder. As the State Treasurer, he served as the head of the Department of the Treasury; he also served on 15 state boards and authorities that had oversight authority for over $20 billion of the Commonwealth’s assets.
 
At the event, VSU will honor several faculty members with the following awards:           Dr. Gerald L. Burton, Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science, The Bank of America Outstanding Faculty Award; Dr. Freddy L. Thomas, Professor in the Department of Languages & Literature, The Spencer and Ruth Timm Outstanding Faculty Award; and Dr. Yaguan Xu, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems, The Ukrop’s Supermarket School of Business Outstanding Faculty Award.
