LADY TROJANS “RAMMED” FOR FIFTH LOSS

The Lady Rams of Shepherd University sprinted from Shepherdstown, West Virginia for their out of conference combat against the Virginia State University Lady Trojans. Coach Evans’ talented troop found Daniel Gymnasium not to be so much of home sweet home, but rather an artic atmosphere as their game 34.9% field goal shooting led to their 75 – 60 defeat by the Lady Rams.

“PLAY HARD & WIN” seemed to be a simple game plan as VSU looked for their first season and home victory of the 2005 - 2006 season. However, tides turned terribly as the Lady Trojans misdirected a below temperature 32.3% in the first half; connecting on just 10 of 31 shot attempts. After VSU took possession of the tip-off, #1 Caromekia Parker put up the first two points. SU responded rapidly with made shots from #33 Casey Landrum and #11 Krissy Grosselin. VSU’s #43 Felicia Gibbs dropped in two to tie the game at 4 – 4 and picked up a loose ball to produce two more points. The Lady Trojans’ 6 – 4 lead was shattered by a splish splash three-pointer from Lady Ram #5 Molly Land. Then, VSU’s third and last lead of the game came via a jumper from #21 Erica Glasper and a made free throw by injury list returnee #2 Christina Williams. The 10 – 9 point margin was loosened out of the Lady Trojans’ grasp when SU’s sophomore standout Land landed two more three-pointers. At 12:45, SU started to set sail with a 16 -9 advantage. VSU took their first full timeout after Lady Ram #21 Tiffany Acker connected from behind the arc for SU’s fourth first half three-pointer. The Lady Trojans’ offense was guided by the hand of Gibbs and her eight first half points. However, the Bloomfield, NJ native’s efforts stood in the shadows of Lady Rams Land’s 11 points and Landrum’s 9 points. SU sighed at half-time with a 35 – 28 lead over the Lady Trojans.

In the second half, the Lady Trojans trekked back to be within just three points (35 – 32 SU) after #52 Janiya Bellard put in an offensive put back and then Parker posted up in the paint to pop the nets with a quick kiss of the glass. Bellard, out of Lake Charles, LA, came up big again with a completion of an “And 1” play and closed the gap to just a basket behind the Lady Rams (37 – 35 SU). Then, Bellard bounced passed the ball of leadership to senior shooting guard Glasper. It was not exactly a walk in the park for Glasper getting her shots to fall, but she kept her head up and hustled vigorously to score 18 of the Lady Trojans’ 32 second half points. Nevertheless, the Lady Trojans’ surge back was short-circuited with three pointers from SU’s Land and Landrum. Then the Lady Rams’ raft of Land and Landrum’s combination of 40 points was kept alive with #42 Laura Harkins’ push for a progressive production of 11 second half points.

Leading in scoring for the Lady Trojans was #21 Erica Glasper with an authoritative 22 points. Other scoring was provided by #52 Janiya Bellard with 11 points and #43 Felicia Gibbs with 8 points.  Virginia Beach, VA native’s #1 Caromekia Parker defensively dominated for a team high 9 rebounds as #4 Janae Johnson and #10 Asheley Alexander had 5 steals each.

The Virginia State University Lady Trojans fall to 0 – 5, but hold strong spirits and high hopes of capturing a win in their 2:00 p.m. tango with Presbyterian College on December 2, 2005. The competition will be held in Daniel Gymnasium.
