VSU STILL IN SEARCH OF SUCCESS The Virginia State University Lady Trojans looped and laced their sneaks for their first home against the Lady Bears of Lenoir Rhyne College. Despite VSU #21 Erica Glasper’s sizzling scoring surge in the second half to drop 13 of her game high 17 points, the Lady Trojans still await their first season win as they lost to LRC 63 – 50. Lady Trojan #43 Felicia Gibbs towered to tap the tip-off to #1 Caromekia Parker. Parker’s possession was promptly passed to a galloping Glasper for the fast break lay-up. LRC lassoed lead with two free throws by #3 Leah Barrier and an offensive put back by #42 Joanie White. VSU flashed down the floor to tie the score at 4 – 4 with #3 Katania Walker’s assist to Gibbs for the turn around jumper. At 14:12, the Lady Trojans took their first full timeout with the Lady Bears leading 9 – 5. Two minutes later, Coach Evans signaled for her second sixty-second timeout as LRC’s four field goals were only divided by one made free throw by the Lady Trojans. After the timeout, VSU’s Walker made two free throws just before #52 Janiya Bellard drove past her defender to toss in a tough two points. LRC rapidly responded with a three-pointer by #20 Ashlei Helton. Helton’s hailmary levitated the Lady Bears with a 18 – 10 lead over the Lady Trojans. VSU’s #10 Asheley Alexander cut the lead back to 18 – 12 with two free throws. Then, the Lady Trojans supplied suffocating defensive pressure to force the Lady Bears into taking their first full timeout after committing three straight turnovers. With just under five minutes remaining in the first half, LRC lunged ahead 23 – 16. Although the Lady Trojans shot an error-free eight of eight from the free throw line, their opponents’ point margin was profoundly protected by a glacial 22% (6 of 27) field goal percentage and 25% (1 of 4) from behind the arc. The Lady Bears hibernated at halftime with a 31 – 21 advantage. In the second half, VSU hit 12 of 26 shot attempts for a 46.2% field goal percentage. One of the Lady Trojans’ three three-pointers in the second half was via a pink and green Glasper. The Richmond, VA native became a human fire hazard as she blazed the LRC defense with second degree burn jumpers and blew past her defender for big-time baseline buckets. Nonetheless, at the 8:14 mark, LRC went up 46 – 34. The Lady Bears maintained momentum for the rest of the game by capitalizing on a majority of VSU’s 13 second half turnovers and brewing up a boiling 92% (12 of 13) from the free throw line. Leading in scoring for the Lady Trojans was #21 Erica Glasper with 17 points. Additional offensive was given by #3 Katania Walker, #43 Felicia Gibbs, and #52 Janiya Bellard all with 8 points each. Sacramento, CA sophomore #4 Janae Johnson and guru guard #10 Asheley Alexander both blind sighted the Lady Bears for 5 steals each.
