VSU'S MORAND PICKED FOR NCAA COACHES ACADEMY
Michael Morand, offensive coordinator for the Virginia State University football team, has been chosen to attend the NCAA Football Coaches Academy, to be held June 28-July 1 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Morand, who is entering his second season with the Trojans, graduated from Florida A & M in 2001.
The NCAA Football Coaches Academy is developed to increase the interests of minorities for head coaching positions. This academy is sponsored by NCAA Diversity & Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities & Interests Committee.
"This three-day workshop will help me in my career advancement for becoming head football coach," Morand said.

TRIO OF TROJANS NAMED TO CIAA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Virginia State University's Tiffany Coggins, Merv Woodlin and Charles Ramey were named to the CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team, the CIAA announced on Wednesday.
All three were named to the second-team of the All-Academic Team.
Coggins, a junior shortstop from Petersburg, Va., led the Lady Trojans softball team with a batting average of .530. She also led VSU in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, runs batted ins and home runs.
Woodlin was a key member of the 2008 CIAA Champion VSU baseball team. The junior outfielder from Philadelphia, PA, was fourth on the team with 22 runs scored.
Ramey, a sophomore from Concord, VA, competes on the VSU Men's Outdoor and Indoor Track and Field Teams. He was a member of the 2008 CIAA Championship men's 4 x 100 relay team and was All-CIAA in the 400-meter dash.

THREE TROJANS INVITED TO NCAA TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three members of the Virginia State University outdoor track and field teams have been invited to the 2008 NCAA Track & Field Championships, to be held May 22-24 in Walnut, Cal.
Freshman Leon Hunt (above left) qualified for the championships in the men's long jump. Hunt's leap of 7.47 meters has him currently ranked sixth in the nation in the long jump.
Fellow freshman Clarence Taylor (above right) enters the championships ranked 16th in the nation in the men's high jump. Taylor qualified with a jump of 2.07 meters.
On the women's side, VSU's Aishah Mujahid (above center) qualified to participate in the women's triple jump. Mujahid's leap of 12.07 meters allows the Lady Trojan junior to enter the championships ranked 10th in the nation.
The NCAA Championships will be held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Cal.

TROJANS FINISH THIRD AT PGA MINORITY CHAMPIONSHIP
Virginia State University's golf team finished third at the 22nd PGA Minority Golf Championship, which wrapped up on Sunday in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The Trojans finished with a team score of 903 over the 54-hole event, behind winner Fayetteville State University (873) and Lincoln (Pa.) (882).
VSU's Jerel Whiting finished third with a three-day score of 218 while Kalani Britos (above) was 10th with a score of 229.

VSU FANS, ALUMNI TAKE PART IN VSU ATHLETICS GOLF TOURNAMENT
Almost 70 fans and alumni of Virginia State University took part in the Fourth Annual Athletic Scholarship Golf Tournament, held on Friday at River's Bend Golf Course in Chesterfield, Va. Participants had the chance to win a 2008 BMW Z-4 Roadster, donated by Richmond BMW of Midlothian, if they made a hole-in-one. The team of Gene Thompson and Peggy Davis won the event while the team of Stan Lewter and Corey Gipson came in second.

STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED AT 2008 SPRING BANQUET
Virginia State University's Danay Freeman and Omar Walden were honored as the 2008 Virginia State University Student-Athletes of the Year during the 2008 All-Sports Banquet, held on April 28 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va. Jona McKee, who starred for VSU in football and who was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame this past season, was also honored for his contributions to VSU athletics. All the VSU spring sports honored their student-athletes during the ceremony
