Agricultural Education and Agricultural Mechanics

AGRI 140
INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE - 2 semester hours
Introduction to Agriculture is a course designed to introduce students to the industry of agriculture.  The school farm will be utilized to observe actual agricultural products and research being conducted by the Agricultural Research Station and Cooperative Extension Service.  Career information on employment with government agencies and private agricultural businesses will be explored.

EDUC 200 and EDUC 300
PRACTICUM – 3 semester hours
The Agricultural Education practicum will be taught as a generic methodology course with field-based experiences as its primary curriculum.  Students will be provided with opportunities to observe, plan, and participate in different roles as a teacher in a school setting prior to student teaching.  Students will be assigned to or will seek experienced teachers as an orientation for the profession.

AGRI 340
AGRICULTURE YOUTH AND ADULT ORGANIZATIONS - 3 semester hours
This course introduces students to the organization and functions of 4-H, FFA, and other youth and adult groups related to agriculture.  Students will observe, practice, and develop skills necessary to succeed as advisors of an organization.  The course will also cover the operation, importance, and benefits of the Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) segment of the Agricultural Education program.  A practicum will be used in conjunction with this course for observation and participation with groups and group leaders.

AGRI 342
METHODS OF TEACHING AGRICULTURE - 3 semester hours
Prepares students to organize and provide instruction to all types of agriculturally oriented groups. A practicum is used to provide an opportunity for the student to observe methods of teaching by experienced teachers.

AGRI343
PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION - 3 semesters hours
Students will develop and insight into the history and philosophy of a program of agricultural education in secondary schools.  Special emphasis will be given to planning, conducting, and managing a department.  A practicum may be utilized to observe teachers as they perform management tasks involved in operating a successful educational program for youth and adults. 

AGED 441
TEACHING AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION – 3 semester hours

This course is a study of the practices of teaching Agricultural Education in the programs of the middle and high school.  The course will include a topical outline of teaching methods, effective teaching and research, student discipline, lesson planning, and curriculum design.

EDUC 401 and EDUC 402
STUDENT TEACHING (402) and STUDENT TEACING SEMINAR(401) - 12 semester hours
Practical teaching of agriculture education classes under the direct observation of a supervising teacher in a middle school and high school setting. Emphasis is on developing the student’s ability to assume total responsibility for planning, teaching, evaluating student progress, keeping records on materials and equipment and managing the laboratory.

AGRI 446
PRINCIPLES OF COOPERATIVE EXTENSION - 3 semester hours
A study of the philosophy, history and development of the Cooperative Extension Service. In addition, attention is given to leadership training, and instructional methods and techniques. Each student will be required to complete a practicum with a selected extension agent.

AGME 140,141
AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS - 2 semester hours
The selection, care, and use of supplies, tools, and equipment to plan and make practical applications of mechanical skills in the areas of welding, woodworking (hand and power), soldering, pipefitting, painting, sketching, drawing, and plan reading.

AGME 242
INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING - 3 semester hours
This course is a study of basic engineering principles of agricultural power and machinery, rural electrification, agricultural structures, soil and water management, with an introduction to agricultural laboratory equipment.
Prerequisites: GEMA 112 Basic Mathematics
GEMA 113 Basic Mathematics
Sophomore or above standing

AGME 346
AGRICULTURAL POWER MACHINERY - 3 semester hours
A study of the construction, operation, adjustment and management of agricultural implements and power machinery. Primary emphasis is on tractor and machinery management.

AGME 442
ADVANCED AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS - 3 semester hours
Emphasis on organization and management of the agricultural mechanics laboratory, selection, care, and use of power equipment in construction and repair jobs. Special emphasis is placed on developing skills in areas where the student is deficient. 

AGME 445
INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES - 3 semester hours
A study of internal combustion engines to include principles of designing, operating, rating, testing, overhauling, and the application for agricultural uses. Primary emphasis is on the basic operation of air-cooled engines.

AGME 446
AGRICULTURAL POWER MACHINERY - 3 semester hours
A study of construction, operation, and adjustment of agricultural implements, and power machinery.

AGME 447
ADVANCED INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES - 3 semester hours
A study of multi-cylinder internal combustion engines, including designing, operating, testing, repairing, overhauling, and the application of agricultural uses.
