VSU's Sixteenth Not So Sweet

The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings visited the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University. The Lady Trojans stumbled upon their sixteenth loss as VSU Alumnus Head Coach Tara Owens and her Lady Vikings defeated VSU 85 –72.

VSU’s #24 Ravin Yancey took possession of the opening tip-off and then dished a pass to #52 Areyal Hall for the lay-in. Yancey returned on the Lady Trojans’ next possession to drop in two more points. However, ECSU stormed back immensely. Around the 14-minute mark, Lady Viking #4 Deanna Price drove baseline to finish with a kiss off the glass and then immediately captured a steal before she released a quick put back. The momentum booster forced Coach Evans to take a timeout at 13:31 with ECSU leading 16 – 9. The Lady Vikings continued with a 10 – 3 scoring run and cornered the Lady Trojans into taking their second timeout at 10:31. VSU shot under fifty percent from the field, from three-point range, and from the free throw line. The Lady Trojans’ 35% (12 of 34) scarcely tailed ECSU’s 43% (16 of 37). Furthermore, the home team was out rebounded 16 to the Lady Vikings 31 rebounds. At five minutes, VSU was not in the advantage with the Lady Vikings up by 18 points.  When the first half concluded, ECSU led 46 – 29 going into halftime.

In the beginning of the second half, VSU’s #24 Ravin Yancey and ECSU’s #13 Venkia Jones traded three pointers.  Although at 17:34, the Lady Vikings were in the forefront 52 – 35, the Lady Trojans’ offense received life support from #21 Erica Glasper. The veteran guard absolutely caught fire. Glasper connected from various locations all over the court. If it was not Glasper’s jump shots sparking the nets from deep, it was the Guru Guards’ pull ups from inside the paint.  Nevertheless, the Lady Vikings still held a 60 – 43 at 14:48. Just before the five minute mark, VSU cut that 17 point advantage to 71 – 60. VSU showed signs of reversing the direction of momentum towards the end of the game, but the time worked in ECSU’s favor before the Lady Trojans could resurface.

Leading in scoring for the Lady Vikings were #44 Christina Hager and #34 Tiffany Smith each with 16 points. Additional scoring was made by #4 Deanna Price with 14 points, #25 Shantel Burwell 13 points, and #13 Venkia Jones with 12 points. ECSU was led defensively with #00 Celeste Trahan with 10 rebounds.

Leading in scoring for the Lady Trojans was #21 Erica Glasper with 28 points. Other scoring contributions were submitted by #20 Jennifer Rhodan with 17 points and #24 Ravin Yancey with 9 points. Rhodan and Yancey combined for 9 assists as Glasper and Rhodan teamed up to snatch 7 steals.
