VSU's Department of Student Activities provides a comprehensive co-curricular environment for the university community. Through its Student Union, educational, cultural, social and recreational programs are developed and implemented to enrich students' academic experiences, individual social competencies, leadership skills, and group effectiveness. The Department of Student Activities is staffed with professional and skilled employees including several hourly and part-time workers. Each staff member fulfills an integral role in enabling the Student Union to offer all the services and programs for which it is designed. The quality of Student Life on campus is its primary concern. We welcome any suggestions or recommendations that would help us to continue to respond to the needs of our growing university community. United Campus Ministry · Contact Rev. James Daniely (804) 524-5214 Academic Enrichment: Programs, activities, and events that complement students’ academic experiences and support the delivery of classroom instruction. Students learn to develop effective organizational skills, improve study skills, establish time management regimens, and set realistic, attainable academic goals. ATM: Located in the lobby of Foster Hall. Report any problems to Gloria Taylor, Purchasing Office, Room 115 Virginia Hall. Aerobics Room: Located in the lower level of Foster Hall. Established to promote healthy living habits amongst students, faculty and staff. Café (Trojan Corner): Features hot grilled sandwiches, fresh pre-made salads, popcorn, ice cream, homemade bakery products and many more delicious menu items! The Trojan Corner is open Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Located on the first floor of Foster Hall. Chapel: The Office of United Campus Ministry coordinates all ministries in the campus community. All religious services on campus, religious organizations, and religious affiliations desiring to come on campus must schedule their activity through this office. Located in Room 312 Foster Hall. Worship Services are held every Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Commuter Student Lounge: Located on the second floor of Foster Hall, Room 202. To provide a place for commuting students to relax between classes and after school. Computer Lab: Located in Room 206 of Foster Hall. To provide students with access to technology/software to assist in the educational process. Hours of Operation: Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m./4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Tuesday & Thursday: 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m./4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday: 2:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Conference and Meeting Rooms: Rooms 101, 111, 210, 211, 200 and 300 in Foster Hall provide various groups with areas for meetings, conferences, workshops, etc. Electronic Reader Board: Located in front of Foster Hall and beside the Post Office. Freshman Student Parking Permits: Freshman students who wish to operate and park a vehicle on campus must fill out a Freshman Parking Request Form which can be picked up at the Information Desk located on the first floor of Foster Hall. All applications must be turned in to Room 304 Foster Hall. Game Rooms: Located in the lower level of Foster Hall. Various table games, recreational and leisure activities are offered to students. Homecoming Activities and Events: Please see HOMECOMING page. Judicial Affairs: The Office of Judicial Affairs is located in Room 205 Foster Hall. Lost And Found: A lost-and-found service is provided at the service counter in the main lobby of Foster Hall. Students may also make inquiries with the University Police. All students are encouraged to report all items lost or found to the appropriate University officials. Pan-Hellenic Council: The Virginia State University chapter of the National Pan Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) is the governing body of the nine Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities who are members of the National Pan Hellenic Council, Inc. The purpose of the NPHC is to serve as an umbrella organization that promotes unity among its affiliate members and monitors their activity through an internal disciplinary board. The NPHC is involved with the cultural, academic and social atmospheres of campus life. The VSU chapter is further involved in community activities which include participation in literacy programs, community upliftment and voter registration. Membership in the VSU chapter of NPHC is limited to those Greek-letter organizations whose national headquaters are a financial member of the National Pan Hellenic Council, Inc., and whose local chapters are in good standing (both financially and socially) with the University and the VSU NPHC chapter. Peer Mediation: Peer Mediation is a student oriented, voluntary process through which student mediators assist students in resolving conflicts amicably. Students are trained in the mediation process and are certified as Campus/University Peer Mediators. Peer Mediation encourages active listening and honest communication and helps the parties examine possible solutions. Students who are interested in becoming Peer Mediators should contact the Coordinator located in Room 401 Foster Hall. Publicity: Posters, flyers or similar displays of print/written shall not be placed on the outside of the buildings, doors or in the buildings on the walls, on the floor, on the furniture or in windows. Posters may not be placed on trees on the campus at any time. Approved posters should be placed on the bulletin boards of each building. Posters are approved by the advisor of the organization, the Director of Student Activities and Ms. Sandra Williams in Room 201 Foster Hall. Posters should be no larger than 14" x 21" or half-size of a poster board. Reading and Study Room: Located in Room 301 Foster Hall. Recreation and Leisure Programs: Virginia State University offers facilities and resources which enable students, faculty, and staff to participate in intramural sports and recreational tournaments. Basketball, flag football, aerobics, softball, volleyball, billiards, ping pong, chess, checkers, horseshoes, and card tournaments are some of the activities provided to validated students, faculty and staff. This program contributes to students’ overall educational experience at Virginia State University. Trojan Yearbook (Virginia State University’s Yearbook): The Trojan Yearbook is an annual publication that gives written and pictorial history of the events that occur during the year. The yearbook is co-edited by students under the supervision of the Director of Student Activities. It is usually available to the student body prior to the end of the second semester. After the students receive their copies, the book is then available to faculty, staff, alumni, and others for a fee. The Riverview Office is located in Room 408 Foster Hall. If you have any questions or concerns about this publication, contact Sandra Williams, the advisor, in Room 201 Foster Hall. Shuttle Van Service: The Shuttle Van is to be used to the transportation of validated Virginia State University students to and from Southpark Mall. This van departs from campus at 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. All students who wish to use this service should meet in the lobby of Foster Hall at least 5 minutes prior to departure times above. This schedule is subject to change with or without notice according to University activities. Student Copier: Pay copier available in Rooms 106 and 206 Foster Hall. Utilize VSU One Card. Student Development: Activities and programs on effective conflict resolution, peer mediation training and conflict resolution management, problem solving and decision making, values clarification, building confidence, maintaining self-esteem, and improving communication skills and interpersonal relationships. Student Government Association: The Student Government Association is open to all students. Students can become involved in the SGA in the following two ways: 1. By election to the office of class representative, student body president or vice president 2. Virginia Statesman: The Virginia Statesman is the principal student publication on campus. The Director of Student Activities is the controller of its operation. In addition to providing a forum for the expression of student views, the Statesman also serves as an extended laboratory for the Languages and Literature Department, affording students an opportunity to develop and employ writing, critical thinking, organizational, management and leadership skills. An editorial board serves to ensure that each edition of the Statesman is quality controlled and truly represents Virginia State University and its student body. The board includes staff, faculty, students and alumni.
