Overview

In this course you will receive an overview of exploration in typography as an important communication vehicle. Emphasis will focus on the type relating to the projects.

 

Course Objectives

By selecting assignments to achieve an advanced level of type not only in projects but in everyday application. We will keep a weekly type journal, where you will select a well designed type example and add it to a book. It will be a collection of little ideas. We will be on the internet reading articles from selective web sites on type design. We will use two text books, The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst and Typography Workbook by Timothy Samara. We will critique all projects and learn how to be objective when using this process.

 

Student Objectives

Through selected assignments, students will perfect understanding of process in project from first idea, rough comps, finished comps to final piece and properly mounted for portfolio. Become aware of audience project is geared towards. Better understanding of computer software and hardware. Our projects will range from posters, book design (cover and inside spread), magazine article, studying 20th century type designers with library research, brochure, corporate identity, and personal business card.

Traditional and Contemporary techniques of type design and copyfitting

Legibility and readability

Productive critique

Typographic problems based on grid


Evaluations

Students will be evaluated through individual and group critique, with a final portfolio review and exam.

Class will adhere to VSU policy. If you are going to be absent, please contact me at email: abbe3@aol.com or cell: 714-936-0789. You are allowed two absences per semester. Any more than that may affect your grade.

Sketch book, journal, rubber cement, USB drive (4 GB), tracing paper, pencils
