MUSI 486 Piano Literature

Prerequisite: MUSI 281 Form and Analysis; Music History survey (MUSI 285 an 286)

(Additional courses providing helpful background are 20th-century Theory, Counterpoint, and any upper division Music History courses in Baroque, Classic, Romantic, or 20th-Century Music.)

 

Course Description: A survey of the solo and concerto literature for the piano beginning with its antecedents in the harpsichord repertoire and extending to the major trends and works of the twentieth century.

KNOWLEDGE

At the conclusion of the course, the student will know:

  • the primary stylistic characteristics represented by the major composers of solo piano literature and for piano and orchestra.
  • the most important works of the major composers well enough to describe the composition's importance to the repertoire, its basic form, and its place within the composer’s body of work.
  • the primary cataloguing systems for the important composers of the pianist’s repertoire.
  • the development of the piano as it relates to the history of the repertoire.

 

Evaluation Strategies: written exams and/or assignments (combination objective and essay); listening log; concerto project

 

SKILLS

At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • identify selected major works of the repertoire upon hearing them.
  • identify the scores of selected major works.

ABILITIES

The student will:

  • demonstrate the ability to research the literature in greater depth through the writing of a formal

research paper.
