Lady Trojans Put Leash On Lady Bulldogs The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs bused from Bowie, Maryland as scheduled guests of the Virginia State University Lady Trojans. Prior to the start of the game, united voices chanting a verse of victory echoed from the locker room of the Lady Bulldogs, but it did not have any affect on the determination of VSU as the Lady Trojans collected their first CIAA win and delivered BSU its first conference loss with a 65 – 57 defeat. BSU jumped to a 7 – 0 lead in the first 3 minutes. VSU’s first score was a #21 Erica Glasper assist that resulted in a #52 Areyal Hall lay-up. Hall returned on the Lady Trojan’s next possession to complete a three point play and make the score 9 – 5 BSU. The Lady Bulldogs’ lead would be impressively increased when #3 Allyson Hardy drained a three-pointer and broke free for a lay-up. However, VSU’s questions about their offense began to be answered by #24 Ravin Yancey. Yancey stepped behind the arc to hit nothing but the bottom of the net and then converted a Lady Bulldog ball-handling mistake into two more points. Her scoring spurt put the Lady Trojans to just within three points as the score was 17 – 20 BSU. VSU’s #20 Jennifer Rhodan hit a jumper and the free throw after being fouled to make the score 27 – 29 BSU. With about four minutes left in the first half, VSU #21 Erica Glasper had the opportunity to give birth to the competitions’ first tie at 29 – 29. Nevertheless, the Richmond, VA native only sunk 1 of her 2 free throws; leaving the Lady Bulldogs ahead by 1. BSU broke open the lead gap a little bit more when #42 Tracy Cole threw up a three pointer with two seconds left on the shot clock. VSU’s #21 Erica Glasper responded with a five-foot jumper. At the end of the first half, the Lady Trojans trailed the Lady Bulldogs 37 – 34. At the very beginning of the second half, VSU was down just one point as #43 Felicia Gibbs “breathed, stretched, and shaked” her way to the basket for two points. The Lady Trojan’s first lead resulted from #24 Ravin “Hot Hands” Yancey’s three-pointer. The game was all tied at 41 until BSU’s #44 Rachill Robinson made a lay-up. Then, a couple of Lady Bulldog turnovers and missed shot attempts became a momentum booster for the Lady Trojans. VSU led 51 – 45 with #20 Jennifer Rhodan’s drive-in lay-up, #43 Felicia Gibbs’ offensive rebound and put back, #10 Asheley Alexander’s fast-break lay-up, and #52 Areyal Hall’s signature “lean back” jumper. Bulldogs’ Coach Russell Davis regrouped his batch of Lady Bulldogs with a 10:33 timeout as the margin status went from the Bulldogs leading by 1 to the Lady Trojans leading by 8. The timeout did not cause any sort of stutter step in VSU’s offense as the Lady Trojans continued their scoring run with an immediate lay-up by #20 Jennifer Rhodan. Bowie continued to build a “brick by brick” as VSU heated Daniel Gymnasium with a furnace full of firepower. BSU showed signs of life by making back-to-back baskets, but the game clock reached 00:00 before the Lady Bulldogs could complete their effort to make a comeback. #3 Allyson Hardy showed up with her “A game” as she contributed 22 points. The Lady Bulldog Senior shot her way in the BSU Record Books as at 3:45 in the first half, she made a jumper for her 14th point and have the most points by a player in school history. Other scoring contributions were made by #44 Rachill Robinson with 17 points as #42 Tracy Cole and #5 Chanel Turner combined for 14 points. As for the VSU Lady Trojans, there were 4 young ladies that were in double figures. #52 Areyal “Mass Comm” Hall had 16 points, #21 Erica Glasper had 12 points, and #24 Ravin Yancey and #20 Jennifer Rhodan had 11 points each. Glasper collected the most assists with her 6 dishes as #43 Felicia “Stretch” Gibbs had 3 blocks.
