The primary reason for giving the Mathematics Placement Exam is to make sure that you have the prerequisite skills needed to succeed in all mathematics courses that are required in your curriculum. While having the necessary prerequisite skills does not guarantee success in a course, lacking those skills almost always leads to failure.
All incoming freshmen students must take Mathematics Placement exam. The schedules for the fall 2006 Mathematics Placement exam will be posted at the bottom of this page.
The placement exam consists of two parts: Arithmetic & Skill Test and Basic Algebra Test. Both parts are calculator-based and require the use of a graphing calculator which you will need to bring with you to the exam, plus a #2 lead pencil. Please be prompt.
The result of the placement test will help us to determine your background and preparation that is necessary to successfully pass the entry level Mathematics courses required by all freshmen. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Office of Institutional Planning and Assessment will conduct the test. The purpose of the Mathematics Placement Exam is to place new and transfer students into Mathematics courses at an appropriate level, aid faculty in giving students appropriate advice, decrease failure and drop out rates, reduce frustration and academic difficulties, and the potential for your success.
We encourage all first term freshmen to take the practice math placement test. Click here to see a sample Mathematics Placement Test.
Students who scored below the cut-off score will be placed in MATH 111 (Introduction to College Algebra and Trigonometry) and are required to pass the course. In some curriculum this introductory Mathematics course will be considered as an elective course.
