Photos By: Mike Payne ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Viriginia State University Trojans battled the Shaw University Bears for the CIAA Eastern Division Championship, but fell short 14-7 at Rogers Stadium. For much of the first quarter the defenses dominated the line of scrimmage. Shaw struck first near the end of the first quarter with a 3-yd run by Bear RB Dion McIver to make the score 7-0. McIver rushed for a game high 110-yds on 28 carries. The Trojan defense continued to impress with two goal line stops in the first quarter. In the second quarter, defense continued to make yards hard to come by. Freshman sensation RB Nick Fleming was kept at bay by the Shaw defense, and only totaled 53 rushing yds on 12 carries. The first half ended 7-0 with the Bears on top of the Trojans. As the second half began, the Trojans had a new attitude as they stepped back on the field. Shaw would soon bring that to an end. Sophomore QB Jermonty Kimbrough found Bear WR Marquis Rutherford for 26-yds down the seam for the Bears second score of the day which made the score 14-0. Rutherford made two big catches on the drive for 40-yds. With 3:42 left in third quarter Trojan QB Michael Terry connected with WR Jerome Jeter for a 20-yd touchdown catch, that proved to be the Trojans only score of the day. The Bear offense totaled 359-yds, while the defense only allowed 175-yds. The Trojans have one more game left at North Carolina Central on October 30th, as they look to try and finish the season strong at 7-3.
