Photo By: Mike Payne --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Virginia State University Trojans were looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss last weekend to the Elizabeth City State Vikings, as they defeated the Rowan University Prof's 27-7 at Roger's Stadium on Homecoming day. In the first quarter Rowan drove the length of the field to the 1-yd line only to see senior running-back Pat Thompson cough up the ball. Trojans defensive lineman Qunicy Byas recovered the ball to put the Trojans offense on the field. In a sloppy first quarter the Trojans could not capitalize on two Rowan fumbles. The Trojan defense continued to dominate with sacks by Neil Purvis and Rashad Pitt. Finally, Trojans got it going with 13:30 remaining in the second quarter with a 26-yd TD pass down the seam to WR Jerome Jeter to make the score 7-0. After another Rowan turnover, the Trojans continued their success running the ball with an 11-yd scamper by RB Dennis Jones, his first since the Trojans second game of the season. Jones' run put the Trojans on top 14-0. The half ended with Rowan fumbling a total of four times and throwing an interception that was caught by Trojan defensive end Theo Plummer. The Trojans wasted no time getting on the board in the second half. VSU QB Michael Terry threw 52-yds down the right sideline to WR David Rodger's to extend the lead to 21-0. Trojan defensive lineman Rashad Pitt continued to wreak havoc along the line of scrimmage recording his 2nd and 3rd sacks in the third quarter. In the 4th quarter with 11:25 to go, Rowan finally broke out of their slump when Prof's QB Ed Rankin found freshman WR Brad Stys for a 9-yd TD catch to cut the lead to 21-7. The Trojan defense as usual, made the Prof's punt on multiple possessions, led behind MLB Duane Taylor's 14 tackles. Rashad Pitt and Neil Purvis had three and two sacks respectively. Freshman RB Nick Fleming capped off the game with a 13-yd Td run to end the game 27-7. Fleming finished with a game high 136-yds on 24 carries and 1TD. Rowan RB Pat Thompson finished the game with 129-yds on 20 carries. The Trojans are now 5-2 and face division rival Virginia Union at Hovey field on October 16th. Game Notes By Edwin Wesley
