The Virginia State University Trojans defeated the two-time CIAA champions Fayetteville State Broncos, 19-3 at Rogers Stadium.

The game was action packed and full of exciting defensive stops. The Broncos jumped on top with a 22-yd successful field goal attempt by Ross Mckernan giving them a 3-0 lead. Coming off a heartbreak loss last week, the defense was determined to play their aggressive 3 and out game to give the offense good field position. Behind freshmen QB, Michael Terry and RB Nick Fleming, the Trojans were unstoppable. The Trojans closed out the first half with a 6-yd TD run by RB Nick Fleming; the first of his VSU career, making the score 6-3.

The second half was full of takeaways by the Trojan defense. Safety, Keith Johnson led the Trojan secondary. Johnson extended his interception streak to 3 interceptions in three consecutive games and finished today's game with two. The Trojan defense compiled 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble with 1 recovery. The offense was determined to keep the same intensity as the defense. QB Michael Terry increased the lead with a 6-yd TD pass to Curtis Johnson making the score 12-3. With under 4 minutes left in the game., the Trojans' put the icing on the cake when Nick Fleming, their freshman work-horse, sprinted for a 4-yd TD run.  Fleming's efforts ended any type of comeback by Fayetteville. Fleming finished his first collegiate action with 25 carries for 116 yds and 2 TD's.
