Educational Talent Search is a federally funded  pre- college, outreach,  guidance/counseling program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The project is designed to identify, encourage, advise, and cousel young people with academic potential to enter, continue, or resume programs of postsecondary education at educational institutions of their choice.  Services about ETS are available in the project office at Virginia State University.  Participants must meet income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education and /or is a potential first generation college student.



Goals:

  • to identify and select participants who have potential to succeed in college
  • to encourage and motivate participants to complete secondary school and enter into post secondary education and;
  • to encourage dropouts to re-enter school and complete their educational training.

Educational Talent Search is also designed to assists students in defining their educational and career goals.  Services are available for youths between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age, who are in  grades six through twelve, that reside in one of the target areas. Each applicant must meet the criteria according to the federal Guidelines.

In addition to counseling, participants receive information about college admissions requirements, scholarships and various student financial aid programs.  It must be understood that the Educational Talent Search Program is not a recruitment program for any one college or institution, but is an assessment and advising program which provides youth with a realistic opportunity to enter and complete a college of their choosing.

  • Study Skills Seminar/Tutorial Assistance
  • Career Exploration Activities
  • Orientation to College and Entrance Requirements
  • Visitations to Educational Institutions. Work Sites, and Historic Sites
  • Student/Adult Role Model Assignments (Mentorship) for Middle School Participants
  • Per-College Seminars/Workshop for Parents
  • Financial Aid Seminars for Parents and Students
  • Assistance in Re-entry into High School or College
  • Individual & Group Guidance
  • GED Instruction for Non-High School Grads

Qualifications for Participation

  • Meets income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education and /or is a potential first generation college student.
  • Is Enrolled in 6-12 or is a high school graduate with potential for education at the postsecondary level.
  • Is a secondary or postsecondary school dropout and has the ability to re-enter and complete a program of education at the secondary or post-secondary level.
