Do I have to live on-campus?
First-year undergraduate students are required to live on-campus, unless their permanent home of residency is within a 25 mile radius of VSU, the student is 21 years of age or older, married or previously married, or has completed a tour of military service.
How do students choose a residence hall room?
Housing assignments are generally random for first time freshman and transfer students. Current students select their room during through Pre-Housing.
What kind of items can be brought to the rooms? Which items are prohibited?

Can students choose their roommate?
Students can choose a roommate. For new students, contracts must be submitted together, and payments made prior to our office receiving them.
What type of security do you provide?
There are staff in the residence halls 24 hours a day, and access to the halls is controlled by use of student IDs 24 hours a day. Staff members conduct rounds every periodically to respond to any incidents and ensure that the building is secure. A night manager can be found at the front desks of every residence hall beginning at 12am.
What is an RE?
A Residence Educator is a professional staff member who supervises, manages, and directs the residence hall and staff.
What is an RA?
Resident Assistants are student leaders living in the Residence Halls who provide guidance to students from a peer perspective.
What do students do if they cannot get along with their roommate?
Students need to work at a roommate relationship, just as anyone living with another person would need to do. The Residence hall staff work with students to learn how to communicate with their roommates/suitemates and floor mates. Most conflicts can be resolved if the parties involved are willing to try, but if there is no other solution than to move a student out of their room, then a room change request is submitted to the director of Residence Life and Housing by way of the Residence Educator.
How many students live on campus?
The Department of Housing and Residence Life provides housing to nearly 2,200 students. That is nearly one-half of all enrolled students.

What will I need to pay in advance in order to secure a housing assignment?

Students new to the University must pay a total of $475.00 – (the $150.00 Housing Deposit, the $150.00 Advance Room and Board Fee, the $100.00 Advance Tuition Fee, and a the $75.00 Orientation Fee.)

Returning students who did not reside on-campus during the previous semester, will need to pay the a total of $300.00 (the $150.00 Housing Deposit, and the $150.00 Advance Room and Board Fee.

How do I connect to the Internet?
Students residing in residence halls have the opportunity to connect their personal computers directly to University Network. This connection will give you direct, fast, full-time access to the Internet, your email account, library databases, and the Blackboard online course management system.

Is there Cable Television in the rooms?
Yes. Effective Fall 2004, basic cable service with the option of HBO, is provided in every student room. Cable service is provided by College Cable Services, Inc.
Where do I do my laundry?
Each Residence Hall is equipped with Coin and University OneCard-operated laundry facilities. The cost for washing is $1.00 per load and for drying is $.75 per load. Students may add money their cards by reporting to the OneCard office located in the UTS Building. University OneCard’s are also used as the University’s official form of Identification and as Meal Cards.
What do I do if I lose my keys?
If for any reason you lose your keys you should immediately contact your Residence Educator or the Resident Assistant on duty so that you and your roommate may obtain a replacement at the cost of $50.00.
Are freshmen allowed to bring cars?
No. Only Upper-class students are allowed to bring automobiles to campus.
Where can I get a parking decal?
Upper-class students may obtain parking decals through the University Cashier’s office, located on the first floor of Virginia Hall.
What do I do when I need something in my room fixed?
Contact your Residence Educator or Resident Assistant and have them submit a work order request identifying what exactly needs to be repaired in your room. Once the request is processed, someone from Facilities Management will attend to the matter.
What telephone services are provided?
All residence hall rooms are equipped with a single telephone line and local telephone service. Students must provide their own telephones. Additional Services (e.g., caller ID, voice mail, etc…) are available upon request. Please visit the University Telecommunication Services (UTS) building for details.
What furnishings are provided in the room?
Generally speaking, each resident is provided with a regular twin-sized bed, a desk and chair, a dresser. Rooms that don’t have built-in closets are provided with Wardrobes (portable closets).
Are pets allowed in the Residence Halls?
Fish, in tanks no larger than 10 gallons, are the only permissible pets.
Can I bring my own room decorations?
Feel free to decorate your rooms with posters and pictures, but remember to use removable adhesive to hold them up. Nails, tacks, and staples are not approved for hanging, and students will be charged up to $300.00 to repair and paint walls. Our windows are furnished with vertical blinds so you cannot bring your own curtains.
Can I burn candles and incense?
ABSOLUTELY NOT. Due to local and state fire regulations, candles, incense, or heated oils may not be used. No halogen lamps or bulbs may be used either.
Are the residence halls air-conditioned?
Yes, all of our residence halls have air-conditioning in the rooms.
When can I move into my room?
Classes have already started... we suggest that you move in immediately!
Can I have a single room?
An extremely limited number of single rooms are available in the residence and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Once all single rooms are filled, an interest list will be generated and maintained in the Housing office. Upon request and submittal of proper medical documentation, singles may be assigned for health related reasons depending upon availability.
