Graphic Design History
RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT
Due Date: November 13 during class
Length: Approximately 1000 words (4 - 5 double spaced, typed pages at 12 pt.)
Subject: Select one graphic artist to be covered in this class who intrigues you, or whose works you admire, and thoroughly research and present his/her life and contributions to graphic arts (see list of possible choices below). Include as many illustrations of their art as possible (but relate to it through the text). Selection of the artist must be made and approved by the instructor by September 18. The content of the paper should include, but is not limited to, a summary of the artist's career with analysis of their outstanding works and style, significant events during the artist's life (personal and in general), discernable personal difficulties or obstacles, education and training, style(s) and subject matter(s), personal influences, and legacy. While the assignment can be done in the form of a biography, relate as many of the events and influences in your chosen artist's life to their artworks as possible. If desired, you may confine your research on the artist to a specific period and/or body of work.
The paper must be researched and presented in accordance to standard art historical practices and formats. All sources must be properly listed in a bibliography and presented properly as footnote citations. Refer to the WRITE manual for the proper formats and research procedures. Failure to utilize these formats will result in a substantial reduction in the paper's grade. Failure to properly cite sources will be considered as plagiarism and will result in a '0' grade. A working bibliography, listing at least 4 sources, is due on October 21. Internet sources other than on-line journals will not be accepted.
Required Appendices: For your chosen artist, please present the following information:
Artist Name
Nationality
Dates (birth - death)
Place of Birth
Degrees and awards
Illustrations are to be presented as appendices on separate sheets after the body of the text and before the bibliography. B & W Xeroxes are acceptable. Each must be numbered and presented sequentially (Figure 1, 2, 3, etc.) as referred to in the text. All illustrations must be captioned with the artists name, title, date, medium, size (if known), and source for the image.
