ARTS 405-01   Survey of African Art

RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT

Due Date:          November 19 during class

Length:             Approximately 2000 words (8 - 10 double spaced, typed pages at 12 pt.)

Format:            Select one piece from a culture or geographic area covered in this class that is currently on display in a museum to which you have access. Thoroughly examine the piece (to such an extent as the display will allow), noting form, color, materials, etc. Take photographs (if allowed) from multiple angles, or make detailed sketches. Completely copy the museum's label information on the piece for future reference and discussion. Selection of the piece must be made and approved by the instructor by September 10.

Using the museum’s identification of the piece as a point of departure, begin the paper by thoroughly describing the piece and conducting a formal analysis. Then, do a stylistic comparison between your piece and similar pieces you have identified in museum collections and/or publications, analyzing it for conformity/uniformity to cultural standards (comparative analysis). Conclude by thoroughly researching your selected piece’s production, use, and symbolism within the culture that created and/or utilized it. You must place the piece within the proper societal context (including items related to its use/display) and explain its content from a cultural specific viewpoint.

The paper must be researched and presented in accordance to standard art historical practices and formats. Refer to the WRITE manual for these practices and procedures. All sources must be properly listed in a bibliography and presented properly as footnote citations. A handout on the proper formats and uses will be made available as a guide. Failure to utilize these formats will result in a substantial reduction in the paper's grade. Failure to properly cite sources will be considered as plagiarism and will result in a '0' grade.

A working bibliography, listing at least 5 sources, is due on October 1. Internet sources other than online journals will not be accepted.

Required Appendices:            For the piece you select, please copy exactly the following information from the museum's label:

                                               Artist Name or Ethnic group
                                               Nationality, Dates
                                               Title of Piece, Date
                                               Medium (materials)
                                               Donor/accession information

You are also to attach either a photograph, slide, or drawing of the piece you have selected, along will comparative illustrations.
