"Art is nothing more than the shadow of humanity." Henry James
The study of art history is an integral part in the experiencing of any work of art. Merely by viewing an artwork, an individual enters into a conversation with the artist, across time, space, and culture. That artist struggled to bridge these gaps by encoding information through design, colors, and symbolism. The viewer, likewise, must decode this visual language to bridge the gaps and derive meaning from the art. While artists cannot foresee our visual culture, the study of art history allows us to learn theirs and converse fluently with them.
