Universal Endows First Engineering Chair
The Universal Leaf Foundation has donated $100,000 to Virginia State University’s School of Engineering, Science and Technology to establish the first endowed chair in that school. The Universal Leaf Endowed Chair, will provide funding for faculty and curriculum development, faculty travel and research and will supplement faculty salaries.
VSU President Eddie N. Moore, Jr. said the Universal donation maintains the positive momentum of the School, which has, in recent years, added academic majors and is in the process of constructing a building that will house the Schools programs. “By funding this chair, Universal recognized the direction in which the School is headed,” he said. “The donation represents a tangible affirmation of our vision to develop the School of Engineering, Science and Technology into one of the premier academic and research entities in the country.”
Alan King, Chairman, President and CEO of Universal Corporation added his personal support of VSU’s programs. “I am pleased that the Universal Leaf Foundation has decided to contribute toward this important initiative in Virginia State University’s School of Engineering,” he said. “I applaud the Foundation’s action and this important effort.”

Its graduates are well prepared to practice in their field of study and/or to pursue advanced education.
The new School of Engineering, Science and Technology building is a three-story, 77,000-square-foot classroom and research laboratory facility that will support the mechanical and electronic engineering technology, computer engineering and manufacturing engineering programs. The building’s design will respect the historic traditions of the campus, while providing a showcase to draw students to these emerging technologies.
The building will contain mechanical, manufacturing, computer and electronics labs, multimedia classrooms, faculty offices, dean’s suite and a state-of-the-art auditorium. The 125-seat, tiered auditorium will be equipped with power and data ports at each seat, as well as audio and video projection of attendee participation.
