Administrative Telecommunication Services
The UTS Office has developed this page to assist administrative staff and faculty members in placing telecommunications orders and reporting telephone problems. We have also provided the required forms in .pdf format for downloading as needed. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view and print these forms.
Setting Up Conference Calls
To set up or schedule a conference call, please call the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) at (804) 371-5574. They will take all the needed information and set up the call for you.
Placing a Telephone Service Order
When placing an order for telecommunication services, please give as much detail as possible. You will need to make sure that you have the telephone numbers involved in any changes listed on the form along with a notation as to what changes you need for each telephone number. If you are relocating telephone lines, you will need to note whether or not a jack is already in the place you want the telephone line moved to.
Telephone Trouble Reporting
There are approximately 2100 telephone lines on the VSU campus. Many of these are used for voice applications, others are used for data modems and fax machines. When you have a problem with your telephone, the very first thing you need to do is determine whether the problem is being caused by the equipment or if it's an actual telephone line problem. If your home telephone had static on it, you wouldn't call the phone company before you checked your phone would you? Just like home, if we call in a trouble and it's the telephone set, they charge us approximately $85.00 just to tell us we need a new phone set or cord. This is something that is easy enough to determine before the line is called in.
First, if you have no dial tone or static on your line you need to take a working phone and cord from another place and try it in the jack where the phone problem is. If the problem clears up, it's either your telephone set or cord, you need a new one. If you still have a problem even after you have switched the set and cord with a set you know was working at another telephone number you then need to call in the phone line to the UTS Office at extension 5300. The telephone set you test the jack with needs to be a regular old desk type set, not a cordless phone. Cordless phones do not work well in our environment due to the number of active telephone lines in such close quarters.
We hope this information will be helpful to you in determining your telecommunication needs. For a review of your University Department's current telephone system and suggestions on what could be done to your current system to make it more efficient and cost effective, account managers are encouraged to contact Kelly Woods via e-mail at kwoods@vsu.edu to schedule a date and time to review your system.
Also available from the UTS Office via e-mail request is a charge listing of the services and equipment available to the University Departments through the UTS Office.
