        Lady Trojan 2004 Outlook

The Lady Trojans of Virginia State University finished a great 2003 season with a 16-15 overall record.  In the conference, the ladies finished with a 10-7 record, placing them second in the Eastern Division and third in the CIAA conference.

The Lady Trojans will truly miss the presence of Alanna Marable, an All-CIAA first team middle and outside hitter.  During her collegiate career at VSU, she averaged 4.11 kills per game and 2.3 digs.  Another loss is All-CIAA second team Katrina Rowser, who averaged 9.52 assist per game in which she lead the conference.

This season the ladies will be guided by a new head coach, Keyonna B. Robinson.  Robinson, no stranger to the CIAA conference, is a native of Wakefield, VA where she attended Sussex Central High School.  She received a BS in Business Office Administration from St. Paul’s College where she continued her athletic career with All-CIAA conference recognition in volleyball (3 years) and softball (1 year).  Upon graduation, she coached at St. Paul’s College three years and returned to her high school and coached for five years.

Coach Robinson has several returnees this season; Andra Colbert, senior All-CIAA second team OH/MB will be a key offensive player averaging 2.07 kills per game and 1.17 blocks.  Jovonda Pethis, senior MB will defend at the next, averaging 1.18 blocks.  Jenene Lewis, sophomore h-hero/utility will step up to set and defend the backrow.  Lydia Harsly, junior h-hero/utility lead the team with service aces averaging 0.76 per game and she averaged 2.39 digs per game.  Mesha Ingram, senior defensive specialist who averaged 3.26 digs per game will be a key asset on defense.  Kimberly Tynes, 5’10 middle and outside hit will also be a reliable player up front.

The 2004 season is here and the only true challenge the Lady Trojans will face is adjusting to the new coaching philosophy of Coach Robinson and incorporating new players into the program.
