Governor Ralph Northam appoints and reappoints members to the Virginia State University Board of Visitors
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has appointed Valerie K. Brown, DM, executive pastor of The Mount Global Fellowship, and Ruth A. Sandoval, CEO of BusinessconX to the Virginia State University (VSU) Board of Visitors. Gov. Northam also reappointed Thursa D. Crittenden, VSU alumnus Charlie Hill and Xavier R. Richardson to the VSU Board. “I am honored to welcome Ms. Brown and Ms. Sandoval as the newest members of the VSU Board of Visitors,” said VSU President Makola M. Abdullah, Ph.D. “I am looking forward to working with them as well as the entire Board of Visitors.”

President Abdullah also acknowledged Gov. Northam’s decision to reappoint Crittenden, Hill and Richardson to the Board. “It is a pleasure to welcome back three individuals whose experience and expertise have truly impacted the Board and the University,” Abdullah said. “Visitors Crittenden, Hill and Richardson’s leadership and dedication are notable.”

Currently, Dr. Brown serves as the executive pastor of Mount Lebanon Global Fellowship of Churches headquartered in Chesapeake, VA. Brown oversees the management and operations of the church’s four satellite locations (Signet Family Life Center, Signet Bowling Center, Summit Counseling and Wellness Center, Key’s Resource Center and Café). Brown’s previous work experience includes teaching positions at Norfolk State University and at Virginia Union University in the Samuel D. Proctor School of Theology. Brown’s prior experience in the corporate sector includes executive vice president/chief financial officer for K.W. Brown International Ministries, Inc.; executive vice president/chief financial officer for The Elder’s House, Inc.; founder, owner and president of a non-profit and tax preparation/consulting firm in Chesapeake and chief financial officer/controller at the Cardinal Savings and Loan in Richmond.

Brown has served on several boards including the Advisory Board for SunTrust Bank, and she has received numerous awards and certifications. Brown earned the doctor of management from the Weatherhead School of Business at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from VSU.

Ms. Sandoval currently serves as CEO of BusinessconX located in Arlington, VA.  BusinessconX provides contextual systems analysis, a qualified proven source of insightful collaborative business strategies and partnerships with community, public sector, nonprofit and business entities. Sandoval also founded DOMINO, a high net worth business network group, focused on collective intelligence and relationship capital among entrepreneurial CEOs. Sandoval previous work experience includes vice president for Strategic Partners & Alliances for Sodexo North America in Gaithersburg, Maryland; deputy director for the Minority Business Development Agency for the US Department of Commerce; and deputy administrator for Economic Development for the US Small Business Administration in Washington, DC. Sandoval has shared her expertise in business and community development through community service and speaking engagements. She has served on numerous advisory and corporate boards including the Virginia Economic Development Partnership Board, the National Asian Business Association (United Kingdom), Shine Global, and the USC Tomas Rivera Policy Institute. She also served as president of the National Hispanic Business Group.

Sandoval’s education and professional development included Harvard Business School, Georgetown University, Dartmouth College Tuck Business School, and American University.
The VSU Board of Visitors consists of 15 members who serve as the governing body for the University.
