Long-Range Planning Goals

At it’s November 10, 2003 meeting, the University Planning Council (UPC) was charged by the President with developing a Long-Range Plan to guide Virginia State University (VSU) through to the year 2020.  Thus, the Long-Range Plan was to address approximately the next 17 years in the life of VSU.  In developing such a Plan, the consensus of the UPC was that it should be based on major, overall institutional goals, which would not only define the future nature of the University, but would also require some major effort to reach.  The deliberate intent was to force ourselves to stretch.  At a subsequent meeting on November 24, 2003, the UPC defined four goals to form the basis for the Plan document.  These goals are given below.

n  To be SACS Level 6 institutions

n  To be a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Intensive University

n  To be in the upper echelon of Tier 2 in the U.S. News & World Report ranking

n  To retain the following essential features as we move forward into the future:

n  Our heritage as an HBCU with a land-grant mission

n  The personalized attention given to students in the delivery of instruction

n  A holistic approach to student development

n  A nurturing environment that supports the needs of students

n  Educational excellence
