The College of Agriculture – Cooperative Extension at Virginia State University is seeking a 4-H Youth Development Specialist/Faculty to provide leadership and strategic planning in research, program development, and instruction in the area of 4-H Delivery Modes for paid and volunteer staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reach out to underserved audiences, in particular, diverse racial and ethnic populations and youth leadership and personal development. Enhance exposure to and application of science, technology, engineering, agriculture and mathematics in 4-H programming. Develop curriculums and other teaching materials, and provide informal instructional programming for youth/adult partners/clientele, including Extension educators/agents. Assist appropriate associations, organizations, institutions, agencies and individuals/volunteers to support 4-H and youth development throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation as feasible. Work closely with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) and appropriate committees and organizations/institutions to promote and facilitate 4-H Youth Development. Provide support for State 4-H Intermediate Congress. Participate in State 4-H staff meetings. Promote a positive image of 4-H, emphasizing its contributions in both the rural and urban areas. Demonstrate commitment to diversity in programming. Seek external funding to support research, outreach and educational programs. Prepare publications and scholarly works, articles, bulletins, and scientific articles for informational and educational purposes. Must be able to travel; provide support to counties; participate in the collaborative work with committees and organizations; attend national meetings and conferences. The successful candidate must possess the ability and credentials to teach credit courses within the field of education, youth/child development, agricultural education or related field. The incumbent will have an appointment in Extension, and may have an appointment in Teaching and/or Research as well.
The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate with at least one graduate degree in agriculture, education, youth/child development, program management, sociology/social work or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education; possess subject matter expertise and an ability to teach courses in one or more of the disciplines previously listed, and be familiar with STEAM. The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge and experience in planning, conducting and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs in leadership and citizenship, and volunteer development with special emphasis on at-risk programming. The successful candidate must also posses excellent written and oral communication skills; knowledge of child and human development; workable skills in the use of information technology and its appropriate and effective use in the development and delivery of educational programs. Knowledge of and competencies in the use of social media as a communication tool is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be committed to working with a diverse clientele, and demonstrate some experience working with such audiences. Bilingual candidates are highly desirable.
