Virginia State University has an opening in the Upward Board Program.  The position will report directly to the Program Director.  Upward Bound is a federally funded TRiO program through the U.S. Department of Education and is designed to assist underrepresented High School students grades 9 - 12 to prepare for postsecondary education.  Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of funds.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Counsels high school students grades 9 thru 12 and provides guidance through group activities, student records, testing, interviews and professional sources to appraise their interest, aptitudes, abilities and personality characteristics for educational planning and/or other services.  Maintains files, both paper and electronic, submitted by staff to input and generate reports.  Expected to design, develop, implement and monitor enrichment, career and cultural activities.  Plans, coordinates and implements all participants’ recruitment activities with other staff persons.  Assist the Director in the implementation and assessment of all program objectives.  Conducts school visits to target areas junior high and high schools.  Acts as the liaison between the school and the office.  Must work approximately 17 Saturdays during the course of the Academic Component and assist the Director and other staff members with the preparation of proposals and reports to the U.S. Department of Education.
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must have considerable knowledge of counseling theories. Ability to utilize Word Processing, Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, and a student database program.  Have the ability to work with a diversified population of faculty, administrators and students within the public school setting.  Considerable experience in a TRIO type program or secondary projects providing outreach services to underrepresented pre-college students.  Graduation from an accredited college or university with major studies in education, counseling or related Field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree preferred.
