VSU FANS, ALUMNI TAKE PART IN VSU ATHLETICS GOLF TOURNAMENT

Almost 70 fans and alumni of Virginia State University took part in the Fourth Annual Athletic Scholarship Golf Tournament, held on Saturday at River's Bend Golf Course in Chesterfield, Va.  Participants had the chance to win a 2008 BMW Z-4 Roadster, donated by Richmond BMW of Midlothian, if they made a hole-in-one.  The team of Gene Thompson and Peggy Davis won the event while the team of Stan Lewter and Corey Gipson came in second.


STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED AT 2008 SPRING BANQUET

Virginia State University's Danay Freeman and Omar Walden were honored as the 2008 Virginia State University Student-Athletes of the Year during the 2008 All-Sports Banquet, held on April 28 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va.  Jona McKee, who starred for VSU in football and who was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame this past season, was also honored for his contributions to VSU athletics.  All the VSU spring sports honored their student-athletes during the ceremony


AASU OUSTS LADY TROJANS FROM NCAA TOURNEY

Second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team knocked off Virginia State University, 5-0, in first-round action at the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Women's Tennis Regional on Thursday at the AASU Tennis Complex. The loss ends the Lady Trojans' season.

The Lady Pirates (27-1) caught a break as the Trojans (17-2) came to the tournament with only four players, giving AASU a doubles point right off the bat. AASU's Martina Beckmann and Alida Muller-Wehlau then knocked off VSU's Asya Monds (left) and Kendra Plummer, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. AASU's Sofia Haggstrom and Alisa Kagukina defeated VSU's Keisha Holmes and Tamilia Hicks, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles to complete the doubles sweep.

With only four singles players, the Trojans gave up points at five and six singles, clinching the match for the Lady Pirates.

TROJANS FINISH EIGHTH, WHITING 10TH AT NCAA SUPER REGIONAL

Virginia State University's golf team finished eighth as the NCAA Southeast/Atlantic Super Regional wrapped up in Belmont, N.C., on Wednesday.

The Trojans finished with a team score of 964, 100 strokes over par.

VSU's Jerel Whiting was the top individual finisher for the Trojans.  Whiting finished tied for 10th place, with a three-day score of a 10-over-par 226.

Greg Hunt finished 40th and Brian Wilbor was 42nd.  Kalani Britos was 43rd while Dustin Kelley was 45th.

VSU now travels to Port St. Lucie, Fla., to compete in the 22nd Annual PGA Minority Collegiate Championship on Thursday.

FOUR VSU COACHES NAMED CIAA COACH OF THE YEAR

Four Virginia State University head coaches have been named Coach of the Year for the CIAA Spring Sports, the CIAA announced on Monday.

Torrie Lashley, the head coach of the Lady Trojan softball team, was named the CIAA Softball Coach of the Year. Lashley, in her second season as head coach, led VSU to an all-time best 25 wins and a CIAA Eastern Division Championship in 2008. The Lady Trojans finished as runners-up for the second straight year.

Merrill Morgan, head coach of the VSU baseball team, was named the CIAA Baseball Coach of the Year. Morgan gained his 100th career coaching victory and guided VSU to it's second consecutive CIAA Baseball Championship in 2008. The CIAA crown was the 24th in VSU's storied baseball history.

Dr. Linda Person, the head coach of the VSU women's tennis team, was named the CIAA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year. Person guided the Lady Trojans to their first-ever CIAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008.

Jeff Hamilton, the head coach of the Virginia State University golf team, was named the CIAA Golf Coach of the Year. Hamilton's Trojan squad captured the program's first-ever championship in golf in 2008 and is currently participating in the NCAA Super Regional in Belmont, N.C.

The 2008 Coaches of the Year will be honored at the Annual CIAA Coach of the Year Luncheon on May 20 in Durham, N.C.
