Dr. Sandra Evans embodies Trojan Pride.
As Director of Virginia State University’s First-Year Experience program, this “true daughter of Orange and Blue,” imparts to incoming freshmen what it truly means to be a VSU Trojan.Because words whisper while actions shout, Dr. Evans’ deeds in support of her beloved university speak volumes! In addition to supporting VSU’s Tuition Assistance efforts and Athletic programs, Dr. Evans contributes to the Annual Fund at the President’s Club level. To ensure her legacy continues for generations to come, she has also established an endowed scholarship and bequeathed to VSU a planned gift. Her singular devotion to Virginia State University serves as an inspiration to other faculty, staff and alumni. “Giving back to Virginia State University is very important to me because of those professors who helped and guided me to become the person I am today,” she explains. “This is how I say ‘Thank you Virginia State University.’”
Dr. Evans credits individuals such as Dr. Jimmy Battle, Dr. Loretta Braxton, Dr. Martha Dawson, Ms. Ruby Hayes, Dr. Marilyn Simpson and Dr. Sadie Gregory for instilling in her that all things were achievable through education. “Now it is my time to give back to the University that took the time in and outside of the classroom to ensure that I gained the knowledge and skills that I needed to succeed.”
Dr. Evans’ passion for the University reaches far beyond “traditional” donations. She gives with a purpose. “My Builders of Hope Endowed Scholarship serves to increase the number of male role models in the field of education,” she explains. “In giving back to my university and students I want them to know someone who invested in Virginia State University really cares about them and their educational development.” As Gilbert K. Chesterton stated “Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.”
