     The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) is the Commonwealth's coordinating body for higher education, and is the primary state entity for collecting and analyzing data related to higher education.  

      SCHEV research staff is engaging in the conversion of its wealth of historic data sets into a data warehouse to support On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining efforts. One of the many outcomes of this effort has been a complete transformation of the way SCHEV publishes data and information to the web. New reports, more ways to view the data, and simpler access have significantly increase availability of statistical data about Virginia higher education. 

      The Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS) is a system of surveys designed to collect data from all primary providers of postsecondary education. IPEDS is a single, comprehensive system designed to encompass all institutions and educational organizations whose primary purpose is to provide postsecondary education. The IPEDS system is built around a series of interrelated surveys to collect institution-level data in such areas as enrollments, program completions, faculty, staff, and finances. 

      The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.
